In this fast-paced romantic-adventure, two American scientists survive a helicopter crash atop a South American jungle mesa, where they discover a 500-year-old Chinese colony hidden in a deep valley. As the scientists puzzle out the mystery of the all-female society, a strangely beautiful warrior named K'un-Chien (Earth-Heaven) entangles the pair in an erotic triad that could heal their souls or end their lives.

Down to Heaven Mark Canter Books

I really enjoyed this book as I do almost all of Cantor's work. He reached for some new methods and usually hit the mark. The setting walked the line between the amazing realities of cloud forests and fantasy; it worked for me overall. He created wonderful characters that felt rich and real, as did their niter actions with each other. As a science teacher I was impressed with his knowledge and the way he stretched the science into science fiction. He also had philosophical themes running through the novel, which again worked for me overall, though some of this was too heavy-handed and dropped one start. I prefer that the reader have to do a bit more mind work to access the themes.

I will continue to seek out Mark Cantor's writing in the future!

Down to Heaven Mark Canter Books Reviews

I read this book a few years ago (I'm 22 now) and I still think about it once in a while. I've recommended it to most of my friends, as well as Canter's other work. I'm an avid fantasy-reader and Down to Heaven is an absolute MUST READ. It is so difficult to put down and resume one's life (but don't worry, that's a good thing!).
Rivals Ember from the Sun. A must-read for fantasy fiction lovers. From the copter crash on page one through the story's end, Down to Heaven rips along taking the reader on a wild, deep, sexy ride. Read it!
This book was so compelling that I started reading it early one night, and couldn't put it down until I finished it at dawn. I continue to be haunted by the fascinating world and characters that the author created.
I loved this book. I like the way Mark can take you into totally different stories with his books, no two are alike. I'm currently reading Second Nature and loving it.
I read this entire book thinking it would get better, but it did not. It had all the elements. Maybe in the hands of a better writer it would have been a gripping thriller or a passionate love story. It was neither. More like a long short story than a novel, with only the two main characters explored. The little insight given to the other characters seemed to be added after the fact. Even the main premise, that they were descendants of Chinese colonists in South America made little sense after 400 years. Why did they choose to remain isolated especially when they had no men to breed with. What happened to the original men? Why only 3 men in the city at one time? Why not kidnap more? And why were Tree and Mason trying so hard to escape? And why were they accepted back, without penalty, when they were unsuccessful? It was full of holes and gaps.

As for the sexy part. When we finally got to it it was all also a let down. It was important for these characters to overcome their stereotypical definitions of gender and sexual roles, to set free their pent-up desires. But the big climatic scene was so soft and fuzzy I felt nothing. No thrill. I was more enchanted by the love story between the 11 year old emperor and the 15 year old girl. A story line that was not explored.

Not a total waste of time, but I cannot recommend it.
Once again, I have been enchanted by Mark Canter's ability to tell a story, keep me engaged, and make me think. This plot is again unique, fast-moving, and provocative. The elements of fantasy become vividly real, even logical, and all the characters--heroes, villains and supporting cast--live and breathe.
